We arrived in Leipzig March 10th around noon and parked the motorhome behind the main railway station. From the railway station a bus took us onto the main square. The church where Johan Sebastian Bach was ”Kapellmeister” for over 25 years, St. Thomas Church, is just around the corner. Bach’s statue stands outside the church.

Off the market square, in the Mädler Passage, is the Auerbachs Keller where Goethe is said to have spent time in his youth. It is also mentioned in his drama Faust I. Auerbach’s Cellar is the second oldest restaurant in Leipzig.

We also visited the Stasi museum housed in the old Stasi headquarters in Leipzig, the Museum in der Runden Ecke. The audio guide in English was very helpful but all the exhibit texts are only in German. Part of the exhibits are about the Leipzig Monday Demonstrations of 1989. The October 9th, 1989 demonstration is often seen as the beginning of the end of the German Democratic Republic.
